Synthomania 2018

2410 N. Saint Marys Street , San Antonio, Texas

In 2012 and 2013, we hosted a synth exhibition and swap meet called Synth-O-Mania. It was a total blast, but if you were in attendance or watched the video, you can't even imagine what the revival is going to be like.

Synthomania (now without the hyphens!) is coming back in 2018, and this time, it's all happening at San Antonio's awesome Paper Tiger. Not only is it a swap meet, it's now a concert and a workshop, too. We'll be having some awesome synth performances throughout the event, culminating in a Gary Numan performance - part of his Second Savage tour, with Nightmare Air opening! Full Synthomania lineup TBA.

We're also planning a DIY workshop, where participants can build an electronic gizmo. A nominal fee will be charged to cover materials. Gizmo TBA.

On display at this event will be synth collections from Syntaur and our Austin friends Switched On. If you've got a synth you're willing to trade, you may want to load it in the car before you swing by (or make us an offer ahead of time). A vast array of synths will be plugged in so you can demo them to your heart's content, and take home the ones you like.

Aside from the optional DIY workshop and the Gary Numan show ($25 advance tickets, $28 at the door), the event is free, so get ready to synth your soul off! It's all going down Saturday, September 8 starting at 3 PM.

— Alice Merton Growing up around the world, singer/songwriter Alice Merton was as influenced by other cultures as much as transience itself. Born in Frankfurt and raised in Canada and England, Merton's absorption of different styles and sounds helped craft the worldly progressive pop leanings on her debut, which came out in 2017. As a child, she learned classical piano and singing while in Canada. When Merton was a teenager, her family moved to Germany, where she would pick up the guitar and write her first song. While in Germany, she also studied at the Mannheim conservatory of music. Later, the family would relocate again, this time to England. These frequent international shifts would play a key role in the songwriting process for her first output, 2017's No Roots EP (Mom+Pop Records). The four-track effort included the groove-heavy title track and "Hit the Ground Running," which won Merton the Jugend Kulterell Prize for Acoustic Pop. ~ Neil Z.
